DIY Pixie Haircut

I realized today that I was in desperate need of a haircut! When your hair is super short, it only takes two weeks to grow out a style.

I was starting to rock the mullet and facing struggles in the morning to make it look good. I took to my pinterest board for some inspiration and then I drew myself to work out how it needs to be cut and how it might look. Since I cut my own hair this really helps me to understand the shape and length of the style that I can use as a reference later. I love that I get to be creative and change my hair at a whim.

Cutting my own hair is also very practical. I save a lot of money and am able to maintain short hair. I wanted to dye my hair too so I went to the drugstore tonight and picked up L'Oreal Feria Espresso 40. The color is a little darker than I usually go. But I really like it! I did have to pick up an eyebrow pencil to match my new darker look.

I feel so much better without hair on my neck.

I wish I could show you how I cut my own hair. But I can only do it naked and I am sort of unorganized about it. But I will explain a little bit (Well, actually a quite lengthy explanation) I am not a professional or trained and this is only how I do it. I have been cutting my own hair for at least 12 years, usually short pixie haircuts.

I first dye my hair, following the directions on the box. Then I towel dry my hair and let it air dry a little so I don't accidentally cut it too short when it is wet. I brush it into the style that I plan on achieving. Then I cut the hairs that aren't supposed to be there! Just kidding! That is what I tell my husband when he asks me how I do it. For this haircut I combed the hair on top forward, separating it from the bottom layer that is supposed to be shorter. I pinned the top to keep it in place. Using a comb, I straightened out the hair in the back, perpendicular to my scalp and pinched it with my fingers. Since I wanted it to be short, I cut below my fingers. Basically I did the same to the whole back and the sides, using my fingers as a guide for length in the areas that I cannot see. It is important not to pull the hair down and cut. You want to pull it out, away from your head.

I cut the hair closest to my neck a little shorter, cutting at an angle gradually. I use a mirror to see the back so I can shape it. I used a razor to shave the wispy neck hairs. Then I took the pins out and trimmed the crown to make it look more gradual and transition to the shorter hair. I trimmed the bangs on the right side only and cut the sideburn-area hair at an angle. A lot of the hair on top was left alone because it already fit the length of the style. I used thinning scissors to thin out the sides and back. I styled it with mouse and texturizer while it is wet, blow dry, straight iron, tease and fuss with, then finish with hairspray.

It is really important to me to also point out that you do not have to be short and tiny like Audrey Tautou to look beautiful with a short pixie hair cut. I am tall, round and have a double chin. But I feel the most comfortable and feminine with my hair short. I don't think you need to hide behind your hair. Even that little roll in the back of your neck deserves a little attention.

Oh, and this was my inspiration! Ginnifer Goodwin :)

Would you ever cut your own hair?

hmm...not sure I would cut my own hair...when I had bangs when I was younger my mom would trim them for me.

Dewi said...

I always cut my own bangs. Results are varying, but I'm not going to pay someone to cut of such a tiny bit of hair! And my mom still cuts the rest of my hair when needed :)

CUTE pixie!!! :D I will trim and style my bangs, and sometimes the rest of my hair or I ask my wife if she can cut my hair for me because she is an amazing stylist!

Your hair looks fantastic! And I contemplated cutting my fringe once but I chickened out!

Jenny Cole said...

Woah that sounds pretty complex! I have med. length hair and ideally would have someone to straighten the back for me; can't imagine actually cutting it! It looks stunning, though and REALLY suits you. I've been tempted to go for the Big Chop before but I have no idea whether it would suit me or not. Jen x

Your hair looks awesome :)

I would never trust myself enough to style my own hair. Once I had this blunt fringe that was getting too long, I felt a bit like one of those dogs with hair over its eyes... Anyway, I cut it all wonky and had to wait for it to grow out, which took ages because my hair is quite long :P

I just cut my own hair for the first time last week (or the week before?).  I just stuck it in a pony tail and cut, then took it out and evened it.  I would love to do pixie but I'm not good at doing things backwards.

Hey, Rachelle - just read through this post and I gotta say, I think you are STUNNING. Love the pixie, it totally suits you. :)

It's fantastic that you cut your own hair! I love the look on you! I have cut my bangs a few times but it's always ended up being a mistake.

I've cut my hair a lot in the past, and trim it now, but usually leave bigger cuts to the pros for now. You look great and I love the color. And what do you mean, you don't want to spread naked hair covered photos of yourself flying across the internet? ;)

i'm too chicken to cut my own hair, but i love to cut my husbands hair! he has to be naked too, so he can jump right in the shower and wash off the little pieces of hair.

I've been cutting my bangs for years but, to be honest, I'm usually furious in the end.  It. does. not. go. well.  Haha.  I've had pixie cuts several times but would NEVER try to do it myself.  I would probably have to shave my head.

The new cut looks so cute!  I love the super short bangs!  :)

i always cut my hair by my own. Actually, last week i had an attack and i cut over 10cm of hair. Happy with the results !

This is so funny, I just cut my own hair today. It's been a couple of years since the last cut so the lenght was getting out of control. I didn't do anything adventurous, just cut the tips off and gave it a little of shape. I hope it gets easier to manage.

FOXY. looooove it.

I have been cutting my own hair since I was about 15. Every now & then I convince myself to go back to a stylist. But none that I have found have had any idea what to do with it, and I usually end up with an awkward pixi-mullet. This looks fantastic. I love your description about 'cut the hairs that aren't suposed to be there'. I'm always surprised how blown away people are that I cut it myself.

Rebecca Brown said...

It's SO CUTE!  Great job!

I cut my own hair for many, many years.  I kind of lost the knack of it so now I go get it cut by a professional.

Coralene said...

You did a good job! I cut my hair into a pixie once but I looked like a dangerous truck driver. I will not be attempting that again.

Admittedly, I have cut my hair...it was like a rabid squirrel with scissors went at my head. It was a mess :) It was also Valentines Day. haha...but seeing how cute your hair looks makes me want to try again! I love short hair, but alas am also short on cash for to keep it up :( THANK YOU for showing me i can do this myself, and not come out looking like the victim of a cute wee little rabid rodent

Thank you for the confidence, I cut my hair when it was long but never while it's been short except shaving when I can't handle it any more. However nearly bald was too cold. I'm not a artist like you but your right short hair does grow out quickly so if I screw it up it will grow and I can change it.

Your style, flair, and confidence gave me the final shove in my decision to chop my own hair off tonight. So, thank you! Yours looks amazing, really. I hope after a bit more practice, I'll be as good! Thanks for being you :) Oh and in case you want to see the results: http://bunchofmalarkey.com/2012/02/not-just-a-trim/

I do my own pixie too! I love that you can change it up so easily and you save the money going to a hairdresser! I love that you sketch yourself before you cut it....and you are right you can be round, with a double chin and still be cute with short hair !

I have cut my own hair once and I didnt do NEARLY as good as you! But I did use your pictures today as a reference at the hair dresser. Thank you for posting them!!

Jenna0811 said...

Love it! You are so talented! I took this to supercuts and they did a good job...I WISH I could cut it myself!

I did it tonight!! I cut my own hair. The hairdresser when she did my cut following your pics did it but I realized I didnt like it as much and it was starting to get too long already. So now I have no bangs and its real real short. I like it though.

You inspired me to chop off all my hair even though I'm a fatty over a year ago and it was the best thing I've ever done for myself.  MAJOR CONFIDENCE BOOST.  I have an amazing stylist who knows my face and what looks good on me and she has never failed me... but she's really  expensive.  I've been tempted to cut my own hair (I've done my bangs in the past) but I don't think I'm *quite* ready yet, but when I am, I will come back to this very spot and let you know how it goes.

Keep being sassy and inspiring, you gorgeous doll! <3

Thank you!   I think I'll try some just to have more control.  I'm just nervous about the back part... hard to reach?

I have been cutting my own hair for about a year now.  I actually get more compliments on it than I ever did when a stylist did it.  Love saving the $60, and it is always kept trim and you don't have to worry about the growing out between appointments.  For those who are thinking about it.  Go for it.  It does grow back. I would just say go a little at a time until you get your hair where you want it.

You are so awesome! Yes, I have been cutting my own hair for a years now and would never go professional again. You have a very confidence inspiring attitude!! Rock on beautiful woman!!

I would never cut my own hair- too much trouble!! But I LOVE yours.
I found a great product for eyebrows. My brows are naturally very light blonde, but I dye my hair dark. At Bordsrtom, there is a line called Anistasia and they make a tinted eye gel that you apply like a mascara to your brows- I love it!!

I absolutely love your hair. I have an asymmetric pixie, and I, too, am a curvy girl. I love short hair. It's so easy.

I found your blog tonight while looking for inspiration (and some technique) for giving myself a pixie cut. I had one a couple years ago and have just finished growing it out into a bob.. but it's time to go back to short short hair! Your hair is absolutely adorable and you've given me the courage to chop off my locks tonight. Thank you!!!

This post finally gave me the courage to have a go at cutting my own hair. I only cut off the mullet from my pixie, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't look that amazing, but i feel so cool. I cut my own hair! Thank you!

Lamoretcaresse said...

I love this and I'm considering getting my long locks chopped into some serious short cute pixie cut. But, (there's always a but) I am not a cute, petite girl. I am a larger woman and I'm worried that I'll just look butch. It looks great, but I have hesitations.

Lamoretcaresse said...

Ok, I just read some of the comments below and I'm going to do it!!! And I think I'll dye it some awesome colour while I'm at it. Thanks ladies!!!

Lisam063 said...

I just went from a bob to a pixie and also did it myself.  I've been cutting my own hair for over 20 years and recently decided to see what is under the colour!
It shouldn't take too long to find out; 50/50 odds to whether it's awesome or a disaster.
Here's to hoping it's awesome:)

Holy CATS!
You're rocking my world. When I landed here & saw your photo and graphics, I kinda fell in love:)

I've been cutting my hair for years, too. I call it a Pixie Buzz, because all it is is a clipper with a 1" guard all over. Sometimes I'l let the front &/or top grow out & cut that by hand. I want to grow out a slightly longer pixie so I googled a DIY pixie cut and I found your wonderfulness. I am thanking the universe that I did. I can't take my eyes off the whimsical pretty that is this page. I'm an artist & designer so getting a visual treat on top of good content was a great surprise.

You are a gem in the interwebz.

I am also a big girl, I have wanted to get a short haircut for a long time. I kept getting told I shouldn't because my face is too fat. After reading your blog and seeing your beautiful pictures I got the courage to have it cut. It was wonderful, I love it and wish I hadn't listened to all the haters for so long. Thanks for giving me the gift of loving myself more! You rock!

I just cut my hair again and want to give a tip. When cutting, don't cut straight across, grab sections between 2 fingers and cut INTO it right above the fingers for finger length. You'll get a piece-y fringy look.

YES!!! I needed this I recently tried grow out my hair and I decided to go back to the pixie and I need to cut it asap! Love this

You inspired me! I chopped it all off!! It looks cute, but I'm definitely going to have someone fix it ;) But, that's not the point. I went from having long hair that sucks and is lackluster to LIKING my hair. This is a huge thing for me, LOL. Thank you :)

LinEli said...

I have cut my own hair before and had the itch to do it again...google brought me to your blog and you inspired me! I was worried that I would look funny in a pixie while 71/2 months pregnant. Not to mention I was terrified of screwing up my hair a week and a half before my brothers wedding. But I did it and I feel amazing and it looks super cute!

I would love to see a video blog of you cutting your hair!!

I have cut my own hair before, but I have had a long wavy style for years. I am considering saving myself the cost and cutting my hair pixie on my own. Hopefully all turns out well :)

Yes, I've cut more hair more times than I've gone to salons. Seems like every time I find a good stylist, she moves :-( So I go back to my own cutting. Mind you, when my sister was going through hair design school, we shared an apartment and I studied all the books too! I just didn't do the hands-on work. ;-) Oddly, usually my own cuts turn out better than most stylists do to my hair because I'm more aware of my cowlicks, how I blow dry my hair, etc. However, if I do find a good stylist again, it would be a treat!

Omg...I love a pixie, but honestly, at a size 20, I'm always scared it'll make my face look rounder. :-/
Trimming my own hair tomorrow...cut a starter inch off today.
Excited.

I do cut my own hair, and family / friends have to ask me if I did it or got it cut...I figure if I'm going to end up with a cut that isn't perfect it can at least be free.

It looks fantastic! I have lost weight, but even at a size 18, I always felt that I looked better with short hair than long hair....I think it actually thins the face, rather than making it look bigger, I want to cut my own hair today...it's driving me insane. Thanks for the boost of confidence! My husband won't help me because the last time he tried to help we ended up shaving my head...tee hee. Keep on rocking that cut, doll, you look fabulous.

I just want to THANK YOU!! For being such an amazing inspiration!! I found your blog while searching for hairstyles for fat chicks. I'm currently in cosmetology school, and at 30 it's daunting to say the least. Most of my classmates are young and thin.. And I honestly found myself jealous. Self esteem has never been a strong point for me, but after finding your blog I have to say I feel better about some things :) So thanks again! And can't wait to see more!

Hey Rachele! Thanks for this blog post. I love my pixie haircut, but my stylist is super expensive and two hours away. I cut my own hair today, per your instructions and it looks pretty awesome! You rock! Thanks!

You rock your cut...and I love your look and your attitude. I'm a slightly round, 48 year old woman with a pear shaped, long face. I'm not supposed to wear hair as short as I do...but i LOVE my pixie. I have al ong nose...recently had my septum pierced to go with the nostril piercing I already have. Nothing like rocking your worst feature lol...I AM a former hairdresser and am amazed how good a job you did. You look fabulous!

Oh I like your hair. My friend asked me to cut her hair in a pixie cut. After my initial panic attack was over, your page was the first one I found that actually made sense. Hopefully I don't butcher her hair. I can totally do this!

I've been cutting my hair for 2 years now. I went from really long hair to a pixie cut, and I too have done it completely naked! LOL I sat in the tub and took 3 hours to make sure i did a good job. My best friend is razor scissors. No electric razor!! Too easy to mess up your own hair. ;) I really like your hair!

That is thew picture I showed my stylist....2 in fact and got "mom with 10 kids who play soccor"...twice. Ready to cut it myself

Bobbin said...

Today I cut my own hair, not a pixie, but your post inspired me to try my hand at it. I had a chin length bob, mostly all one length. I pulled the top part of my hair, all the way around (about three inches above my ear in a line) into a ponytail at the crown of my head, secured another band about an inch away from the first, and rough cut the remaining length. The rest I shaved with my clippers using the 1 1/4 inch guard. I am now rocking a choppy layered look that sweeps to long wisps toward the front.

Cara Wilcox said...

You beautiful girl! Thank you for sharing your bravery. I have been cutting my own hair for the last six months because I was tired of having to pay an arm and a leg for a salon "professional" to still not get it right. I don't want to look like I am on Designing Women! I want to look like a pixie! Yes, I have adult acne and an "inter tube" middle and mommy butt, but I feel pretty and dainty when my longish face is shortened with a short hairdo. I successfully cut it and am continuing to do so, and I am so happy.
