Halloween 2007 Flashback

We didn't dress up this year or carve pumpkins (gasp!). You can see my costume from last year here. But I am still very proud of my costume from 2007 so I am sharing that with you instead. It was my best one yet!

I went as Marie Antoinette and had a Marie Antoinette themed birthday party. I made and styled my pink wig from 2 blonde wigs. I used clothing I had and added a necklace to the bodice. I was "decapitated" for Halloween night and was the living Queen for my birthday party.

We had champagne, cake, food, Guitar Hero and finished the night off with the Sofia Coppola movie. Please note the candy sushi on the platter in the above photo. I spend wayyyy too long making that! This year we are watching some scary movies with the kitties.

What did you do for Halloween this year?

Stay In and Watch a Film: Horror

The Thing
These may not be the best of the best as far as scary movies go. But these are the movies that we watched recently, mostly for the first time, and they may give you a little fright! If you are looking to cuddle up to some movies on Netflix this weekend, I recommend giving these a chance.

Wrecked
Misery
Fallen
Children of the Damned
Flatliners
Isolation
Paranormal Activity 2
Poltergeist II
Trollhunter
The Crazies

Any scary movies on Netflix Instant Watch that you thought were good? We have a Hitchcock marathon planned but would love to watch a few others too. Scary movies are the best!

How to Make an Autumn Cowl

I got the crochet bug this weekend! I was yearning for a scarf of some sort so I solved that problem by making an easy cowl. I started it on Friday and finished by Sunday. By Monday, I was able to wear it! I used one of my favorite colors and it is a perfect addition to my fall wardrobe. If you have just a little crochet experience you can make this cowl too! First, gather your supplies. For a chunkier cowl, use a thicker yarn and bigger hook.

You will need
2 Balls of Yarn
Crochet Hook
Yarn Needle
Scissors
Chilly Neck

Step 1
Make a chain of 45. Chain more to make the cowl wider, less to make it more narrow.

Step 2
Single crochet in second chain from hook and in each chain across, to the end of the row.

Step 3
Chain one and turn by flipping your work from right to left. Work in back loops only, single crocheting in each back loop to the end of the row.

Step 4
Keep repeating step 3 until your cowl fits around your neck as desired.

Step 5
Do not fasten off. Fold your cowl in half and match the corners. Using small pieces of scrap yarn, connect the cowl in four or five spots to ensure that everything lines up. Crochet or sew your piece together with remaining yarn, removing the temporary ties as you go. Fasten off and weave in your ends with the yarn needle.

Step 6
Flip it inside out and get ready for a warm and cozy neck!

If you would like to learn to crochet, Crafty Minx is teaching Crochet School on her blog. She has videos and homework assignments. Plus she is a super cool chick!

Music Monday: Go For The Throat by The Elected

Two of the band members of The Elected are also in Rilo Kiley. This video is really neat, especially because it features animation by fellow Portlander and friend, Noah Dorsey. Enjoy!

Happy Caturday!

Sandy likes to use the discarded veggie bin box as a cat bed. So cute! I have been crocheting this weekend and can't wait to finish my quick project. I'll share it here when it is done. Well, we are off to dinner with friends!

P.S. I am doing ok with the medical stuff that I mentioned before. I probably overreacted but I am still waiting for some tests to come back. So don't worry about me!

Pixies, Short Hair and Cropped 'Dos, Oh My!

It's no secret that I love short hair! It is a topic that comes up occasionally here. Whether I am deciding to grow it out a bit or debating on going back to my beloved pixie.

These are images I have collected on Pinterest. All I need to do is peek at these and I know I have made the right decision.

If my hair has become a little bit longer, I get crazy short hair fever and run the risk of being jealous of every pixie out there. I also get pretty excited when a celebrity cuts her hair short and I will watch a movie just because there is a short haired actress in it (like Jean Seberg).

Collecting photos of cute cropped 'dos is one of my pastimes. What do you guys do for hair inspiration?
