OOTD: Fuck Flattering!

Sorry, if having the word "fuck" in this post title is disturbing to some. I do swear on my blog occasionally (I even sang it to you once!) and sometimes there is only one word that can be used and it just happens to be a four-letter one. In the spirit of self-love month, I have no problem with saying it - fuck flattering! The phrase was not created by me though. I have been admiring Gisela and her clothing line that challenges the concept that we must wear clothes that flatter our figure or that we should hide the bad parts of our body. I am certain that this skirt would be frowned on by Stacy London from "What Not to Wear" but screw that! I am love my high-waisted pin-striped pencil skirt with pockets!

skirt : torrid
striped top : thrifted
cardigan : torrid
leggings : fashion bug

I used to be deathly afraid of tucking my shirt in. So much that I was fired from a job because of it! Not anymore! I am over yanking my shirt down to cover up and living in this body.

Women, especially plus-sized, are encouraged to create illusions with our clothing. That we should minimize our flaws. But let's accept ourselves instead. I would much rather dress in what I think makes me look great and things that I like. We don't have to follow the rules of successful dressing. Let's succeed at loving our bodies and turning our perceived flaws into beautiful assets instead!

Will you join me in giving the middle finger to style rules?

I've been thinking similar things myself, but it is only slowly dawning on my consciousness and I am far from breaking the rules yet. It's still hard for me to distinguish between not wearing something because I genuinely don't like it and because I'm afraid of it not being "flattering", so I have a way to go yet.

But I love this post and you look great! I hate the F-word when it is aimed at people (in fact I can be a bit wimpy/oversensitive about it!) but when it is aimed at institutions, systems, prejudices and injustices etc, I say fuck it!!

you are brave my friend! What a cute outfit :) and I am right here with you giving my middle finger...I'm going to wear things however I want! Thanks for the inspiration...I suffer from BDD and it's a huge battle for me to even do outfit posts.

I think you look great actually. The color & pattern choices are great. And your confidence really shines though here, which is all you really need to look good in any outfit.

Confidence is far more flattering than a "correct" outfit!! Kudos to you, and look how gorgeous that confidence makes you!

horizontal stripes are my particular brand of "fuck flattering"... I can't stop buying tops and dresses with them :) hooray for high waisted pencil skirts and tucked in shirts... I love the look on you and it's one of my favorites as well.

I've been petrified by skinny jeans for a year or two now, and because of your blog...I bought a pair and wore them last night. And frankly...I looked fabulous. Sure, I'm pudgy, but I was comfortable and happy, and I'm certain that exuded from me. Thanks for the inspiration!

yea fuck flattering! i totally agree, i hate rules and why should there be for dressing and who made them up, is the real question! i used to not tuck my shirts in either and i love doing it now. i am really jealous of your red striped shirt, i have been on the hunt for one and have come up empty! i am determined to thrift it too!

I absolutely admire your confidence! I have a hard time accepting some areas of my body and finding outfits that 'flatter' them, but I should just get over it! I love your rule breaking style, lady!

I've been reading your blog for awhile and had to comment on this post- it, and you, are fucking awesome! I am always wearing things that I love even though they might not be flattering by conventional standards. It can be hard not to feel self conscious sometimes (I'm a plus-sized, heavily tattooed mother of two who recently relocated to Northern Virginia...yeah...) so it's really refreshing to read this. : )

i am short, curvy and bottom heavy.  i just bought a pair of light coloured, high-waisted uber flares with pork-chop pockets.  if that isn't breaking a ton of "rules", i don't know what is.  =)

I love this post and I love you for posting it. Too many women, myself included, end up hiding and covering up and wearing things that if I had my way, wouldn't be caught dead in, all because I'm too worried of standing out or pointing out flaws. But you're right. Fuck that. And honestly, you look so gorgeous and happy that it's inspiring. You're gorgeous and never let anyone tell you otherwise!

I don't wear very much black. I mix it in with other colors a lot! I am not sure if I could handle an all-black wardrobe.

Rachele said...

You are too sweet! You can be something better than me...you! I hope I can pass on some of my confidence though.

Rachele said...

Thanks dear!

Rachele said...

Rachele said...

Thank you! It can hard but not breaking my body down to certain parts was the best thing for changing how I dress.

Rachele said...

Thank you hon!

Rachele said...

Seriously! Who made up these wacky rules?!?! Wearing clothes isn't that complicated. I love being able to thrift something I have been looking for. Best feeling ever!

It has been quite liberating for me and really changed how I saw my body when I started doing outfit posts.

Rachele said...

Haha! You are awesome! I definitely think you should wear things you like and are comfortable with, but don't let the rules hold ya back!
