It is more normal for my nails to be short and unpainted but every once in a while I let them grow and paint them purty. Sometimes I even paint them to match my hair!
I used Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Heat Flash for the base and some old purple Wet and Wild. I followed Dainty Squid's advice and used this tutorial. They came out better than I thought my first try would!

These are so cute! My nails are always so short that painting them is like a full-time job. I might have to try this though!
