A Fat Woman and a Pixie Haircut

I've talked about it before but I can't advocate enough! If you are fat, there is no reason why you should think a pixie haircut is out of the question for you. I have seen the most kick ass short hairdos on the ladies with junk in their trunk. But for some reason, it is a widely common opinion that short hair is for thin women only. I have read in magazines that you should wear your hair long if you are curvy. Seriously!?! That is a load of crap. Those rules were written to make woman feel insecure about themselves and spend more money on weight loss and beauty products. There should be only one fashion rule. And that is there are no rules.

I love, love having a pixie haircut. It, ironically, makes me feel more feminine and put-together. I have cut my hair short since I was 16 and it feels like a weight of my shoulders whenever I go back. I have had long hair. My hair was down to my butt when I was a kid and I let it grow out my senior year in high school. Personally, having my hair short makes me feel more beautiful. I have also cut the time my morning routine takes in half. Changing hair colors is easy, I use less hair products and hot water in the shower, I get less migraines from my hair being pulled back too tight or from the weight of my hair, etc, etc! There are so many positives!

If you are thinking about cutting your hair, I would recommend using Mia Farrow and Jean Seberg as fashion inspirations. They are petite but their style and cut is classic. I try to stick with a more 60's French look that is more sleek and less 90's housewife. If you are not into cutting your own hair like me, take in lots of photos of the exact haircut that you want. Try to bring in different angles. I have a pinterest board for some of my favorite hair styles. Make sure your hairdresser has experience cutting and styling short hair. You will also need to learn how to style short hair. I only comb my hair when it is wet and then use my fingers and hairspray to dry and style. I also use a round brush when blowdrying the back and top and sometimes tease the crown a little. I keep the sides flat. But of course all types of hair are different and you will have to find what works for you!

You REALLY look great with your pixie haircut! I think short hair is another one of those "fat" myths which are designed to make us all feel bad. I love the colour too!

Hooray! Fat pixie haircut pride! I cut mine about 2 months ago and its hands-down the best haircut I've ever had. Those glasses are also gorgeous, especially the little hearts on the sides :)

Such a cute cut and color on you!  When I was about 10years old I really wanted short hair, but my neighbor (who was also a hair stylist) told me that I couldn't because "my face was too fat"! What a horrible thing to say to a 10 year old (and what a horrible thing to come out of the mouth of a mother of three)!  It's something that always stuck with me.  And now I look back at it and think, what complete bullshit! When I got to college I chopped my hair off and it felt so amazing.

Very cute! And those magazines you were talking about? That's exactly why I stopped reading them. They all said the same thing and its' a bunch of crap!

Keep rocking it out 'cause you are awesome!!

your pixie is so cute! i've been thinking about it. i don't know if i could give up my long bangs though.

AGREED! It looks awesome on you and you have always been my inspiration... I love having a pixie cut for all those reasons you said.  When I first got it cut, a girl in the waiting room (who was tiny) was like, oh, I wish I could pull that off, my face is just too round!  I told her, I think I've got you beat there.  But whatever... That is really all a bunch of crap that people tell themselves, that they have to achieve some mythical proportion before it will look right.  If you love it, it will look right!!

you look lovely in a pixie haircut :)  i think people always look best when they feel comfortable and confident.  i consider myself a long-haired person, and always hated how i looked when i would try short hair... but that's me!   if you feel more feminine and put together in a pixie haircut, then that's what will look best on you.  it shines through.  x

Love love love it! You look really pretty witha  pixie cut. And I agree. Saying you have to have long hair so you look less fat is BS!

You do have SUCH gorgeous hair! I keep getting in a funk about my pixie, but that's because mine actually takes more work than longer hair on me :( For some reason, no matter what I do, my fringe area fans out directly upwards!! I've tried rocking it, but it looks terrible. The best I can do is painstakingly try to curl it under with mini straighteners... Ugh. Then the hair on top doesn't sit where it's supposed to, and it's a complete nightmare! I'd love it if you did a short hair product post soon, as I'm just about ready to start wearing my wigs until my hair is long again!

Your hair is so perfect! Nearly every one of your posts makes me want to cut all mine off again. I'm sure as soon as I am "done" growing my hair out then the pixie will be my weapon of choice once again!

You look great Rachele and really rock the pixie. I've had many, especially in the 90's. Although now I'm praying to the gods I didn't have a 90's housewife pixie. What does that mean?

You look absolutely amazing! Whoever thinks you have to be very slim to rock a pixie cut has no idea what they're talking about. There shouldn't be these 'rules' that dictate what each body type should and should not be wearing.or what hair cut they should not have.

I totally agree with you.  I'm quite petite, with a mane of rapunzel-length hair.  I can't tell you the number of times I've been told that I should wear my hair short because long hair 'swamps my frame'.  Pffft!  I love my long hair.  And I love your short hair.  Let's all just have hair we love.

I'm not sure what mag's you read ect, but it's a widely known fact that they say short hair is flattering to bigger women and long hair should be avoided, just sayin'. :)

I'm one of those annoying people who is never happy with their hair! But I think sod what everyone else says, you have your hair styled the way you want!

I've been reading your blog for about a year now. I stumbled on it because I was looking for pictures of fat women with pixies for my own inspiration. Since finding your blog, I've convinced myself to get this haircut. I've had a hard time convincing the hairdressers though. Three times I've been told that my face is "too round" and "won't look good with that haircut." Wish I lived close to you so I could pay you to cut my hair!!

I'm really leaning towards a pixie haircut when I get my hair cut in November - my last haircut was chin-length this spring, and I really do like how I look with short hair. My only concern is that I have a lot of thinning on top of my hair thanks to my PCOS, so I'm wondering if the short hair would make it even more noticeable... but it's a risk I'm willing to take at this point!

Your blog is a lifesaver! I want short hair but everywhere I went they told me it just wouldn't look good! But, seeing your blog ..I'm taking that risk after all its just hair, it will grow back! :) thanks again.

Like you, I have almost always worn my hair short. I have grown it out a few times since I was a kid (my hair remained uncut until I was 10, and I insisted) but I love my pixies! Luckily, I am married to a man who loves short hair, but even if I wasn't, it would be short anyway.
Short hair shows off beautiful facial features, and, like you said, it's easy to care for. It's cute at any size and age. It's not for everyone, of course, but I can't believe anyone would tell someone no, they can't do it because they are too big (or whatever). Even if it looks awful, it's *hair*, people. It will grow back! (Spoken from someone who was once bald, and on purpose.)
I don't read stupid fashion magazine articles, and I only watch style shows and read blogs that make people feel good about themselves. We women need to banish the rest from our lives!
I'm glad I found your blog, Rachele, you are fabulous.

THANK YOU!! I think you look fabulous!
I'm a big girl, I've almost always had long hair (shoulder length and longer) because people often tell me that women with round faces should have long hair to draw the eye away from the face ?? what do you mean to tell me that because I'm fat I'm also automatically ugly oh I think not!
To be perfectly honest despite having long hair it is ALWAYS worn in a slicked back ponytail - I mean why even have long hair I may as well shave it off!
I'm over all of that! - I turn 35 this year and I'm all about me this year. I've decided to go for the chop I mean what's the worst that can happen? I hate it and I grow it out - that wont take long with how fast my hair grows! and the best? - I love it and find a new style for life!

Please tell me how you colour your hair? I just got my hair cut short after finding your site and loving your hair. Now I really want to dye it an amazing colour, like your red, or maybe a blue. I'm just wondering what red you used in these pictures. Do you bleach first? I have mid brown hair and haven't bleached my hair in over a decade and I really don't want to kill it. I've been looking at Manic Panic colours and can't decide to bleach or not to bleach. Help?
