My 2 year blogging anniversary was not too long ago! It is definitely the longest I have ever stuck with a blog and you would assume I know my shit by now. I don't think there is a definite way of blogging but I have some little nuggets of knowledge.
Take a shit-ton of photos
Take pictures when you are wearing something cute, when you cat farts, etc. You know, take lots of them. I have a constant backlog of photos to work from and could probably blog for the next month without having to take another photo. I organize photos into folders that will become photos that I use for a blog post. Every few months, I go back through all my photos and pick from the outtakes or randoms and those become my B Sides. I like to take advantage of when I am feeling inspired or refreshed and take lots of photos during that time because I might need them later when I having an off day or too tired.
Make somewhat of a plan
I am not a big planner or organizer and don't actually follow this rule all the time. But I do have a Google Calendar that I use to map out blog posts. You can quickly add them as an event by clicking on the day. I have started to make an event for every blog post I have ready, plan to do, is just a brainstorm or a sparkle in my eye. I put them at the end of the week. Then when I am ready to do some serious adult planning, I can drag them to the day I will probably post it. Even though I have a lot of photos ready to go, doesn't mean that I don't still blog on the fly sometimes. Sometimes, I think of something at work and then post it during lunch. I like to keep things real and passionate as well as share pretty photos.
Be real
I love DIY's and recipes and some blogs are focused on that and that's ok. I take a different approach. When I post a recipe or DIY, it is because I am fucking hungry and lazy and want to make some strawberry tarts. I figure I am not the only one and share with you guys! Also, text only is okay. I started posting without photos occasionally and I surprisingly received some awesome feedback and started a conversation with my readers. I take my blog seriously and I don't at the same time. I don't depend on my blog as my primary income or to promote a brand. Having a lifestyle or personal blog gives you freedom to be yourself! Take advantage of it! I am not worried about upholding a reputation or representing my company, so I blog to express myself, write out my feelings, share photos, document my life and sometimes make a statement. I still consider myself a blogger. I enjoy the work that goes into it, the results of a curated post, telling a story and watching my blog grow.
Create a pattern
I like to have weekly and regular features. I have Sweet on You Sunday, This Week on Instagram Snapshots, I am Proud of My Size Link Up, Happy Caturday, B Sides, Thrifted Finds, Stay in and Watch a Film, Month in Review, etc. Some of my features don't get visited very often or I forget or don't find the right space for it. I have also ditched some features like Work Through the Pain Wednesday, Owl of the Week and Style Crush. I stopped doing Sweet on You Sunday when I was posting daily drawings and lists, but then went back to it when I felt like I could fit it into my schedule. Having features helps me but you don't have to do it. Remember, you don't have to follow any rules. Fuck rules. Oh, I also tag/label my posts like crazy. I have more tags than I probably need but I like to be able to reorganize my blog easily or find posts easily. For example, I have a tag Our Kittehs. Anytime I post a photo of our cats, it gets tagged. Because I like to look at my kitties. It is probably overwhelming for someone else to look at all my tags but that is why I have simplified breakdown of categories that my posts fall into on the left side of my blog. My point is, patterns are easy to follow and people like them. So however you do it, find your rhythm so you don't feel too scatterbrained or random. Which brings me to my next one.
Change is okay
Yes, patterns are good but you are allowed to change! My blog has changed and evolved the same way I have. I like change and enjoy challenging myself. I feel like we are all complex and have different sides of ourselves. For me, blogging has been about letting my different sides come out. That means that sometimes I ditch ideas and create new ones out of the blue. I like pushing the limits and want to be part of a revolution. If you are into that too, then don't blend in too much. Make waves and don't be afraid to change. I also don't like to give my whole life story right away and tell you everything about me upfront. I rather like my blog to be a journey, revealing the things that make up me. I don't apologize for my blogging habits and I don't talk about blogging all the time. For me, this seems redundant. It is like turning on the TV and only find shows about producing television. Not quite as interesting as say, a documentary on whales or an episode of Friends. Okay, bad metaphor, but you get it!
But you are the boss of your underpants and could do as you please. These are just some of the things that worked for me and you can take it or leave it. I don't want to be a bossypants. We can all find our niche!
P.S. If you have any questions about blogging or how I do things, I will be sure to respond to your comment.

Blogging is apart of my job and sometimes promoting a brand can be a pain. Coming to your blog from time to time has given me the inspiration to keep a personal one away from my professional. It's been soothing and the topics system not only keeps things organized, but has a bit of a meditation to it. Thank you for sharing your lovely life and courage with me and the world! <3
I appreciate that! Being able to blog about whatever I want has it's perks but it is easy to feel unmotivated sometimes. You definitely have to love it!
Thanks so much for this post. I feel like when people make these kind of posts, they are outlined in such a way that I feel if I don't follow it to a 'T', I'll certainly never have a successful blog.
I've tried to get into blogging for years. Years. I always delete them because I get bored with them / I change / I hate the name. How did you come up with a name you loved? I've tried making a big list of things that I love / describe me plus like... colours I like and verbs so maybe it could make a nice name but I can never come up with anything! Oh, and do you feel that every site of yours has to be uniform? Like... Tumblr / Twitter / etc all having the same exact name? I always am frustrated because I'd like to have a nice blog name and use it for all the websites I like but a lot of them have different... guidelines that their usernames fall under so it's usually not possible. Do you have websites that you use but don't share? I don't know what line I should stop at as far as that goes.
What else... (Sorry for all the questions!!) :\
I feel like I want to ask more just in case I don't get another chance to but.. oh well! Thanks so much for this post! :)
Have an awesome day. :)

thanks for those tips, I am terrible at keeping up with my blog, hoping to finally get into more of a routine with it! xx
Thank you for these tips- they're great! I'm so bad at keeping a schedule for my own blog, but I know I need to start. :-)
Hello I love you blog, I love your post, I love everything!!
But i thought I would just let you know that the code you have been giving for your button doesn't seem to work because there isn't a www. before your address? I don't know if that is just me but i tried to get to your blog from the militant baker's and it didn't work but when i put the www. in it did? Just though I'd let you know incase its not just me being craaazzyy! Dulcie x

Those are awesome tips! I've learned that taking a ton of pictures is definitely key! And I know I love having a schedule. I do have a question though! Do you normally create a post the day you put it up, or do you create it days in advance, planned to be posted sometime later that week? I'm not sure which one I should do...and I was curious to see what other bloggers did! And thanks for all the advice :)

I agree - take a ton of photos, you will use about 1 of every 10 you take.

Thanks for such a fantastic post, it's great to hear a different perspective on things- usually it's just 'Plan ahead', which isn't always possible in the real world where life tends to get in the way. Loved this <3 xx Kim @whatpeggysaid
I agree! I fly by the seat of my pants, including how I blog.
Very true! I always have tons of outtakes or duds but then when I look at them later on they seem much more charming and use-able.
I usually create it the night before and schedule it to post the next morning, if I am really on top of things. Sometimes if I am editing photos I will create drafts with just the photos and then add the text later. Or if I have an idea I will write it up and save it as a draft to be used later. But I tend not to schedule my posts ahead of time unless I am going out of town. The earliest is usually the night before it goes live. I know some people create and schedule all their posts at the beginning of the week. I feel like I need a little more control than that and I like being able to blog at a whim or talk about things happening right now.
Thanks for letting me know! I will get that fixed.
I am a very undisciplined and spontaneous person, so if I can do it, you can do it too :)
You're welcome! I have sort of a wild routine that only makes sense to me but maybe that works for you too. Sort of an oxymoron!
I can't help but roll my eyes a little bit at those posts ;) I have felt the same way with my blog at times. Like I want to quit or change the name. Usually after something discouraging happens. I try to sleep on it and use that urge to change what I am doing just a little bit so that I feel passionate about it. Or blog about something that I am really passionate about and it gets that fire going again. Believe me, I have stared at the Blogger screen with a blank face and have no idea what I am going to post. I picked the name because I like owls so much and was collecting them like crazy at the time. So I read the wikipedia page on owls for some sort of fact or thing that I could add to it. It said that owls are farsighted. Since I am nearsighted, I decided to be cheeky and call my blog The Nearsighted Owl. I switched a couple of my online logins to match. The only one I really don't make public is my personal facebook.
:-) I like that. It makes me smile.
Oh yeah, me too. So frustrating. But there I am, every time, trying to figure out blogging from a 'pro'. Haha.
I do that all. the. time. I know my family is getting so irritated with having to e-mail new accounts all the time.
You know, as bad as it is, I usually don't sleep on it. I probably should though, next time I get that urge. Or at least do what you said and revive the fire I have for blogging. I'm not a pro by any stretch, but I love blogging.
Aww, how cute is that! And I never knew they were farsighted. Fun fact! I'm farsighted. :P
Hmmn, thanks so much! :D I really appreciate you replying! Sorry if I was so awkward. :S
Great post. Taking a lot of pictures is key to me. I take a lot of pics and it helps me.
Also, planning ahead is a big thing as sometimes life gets in the way.

I think that "you are the boss of your underpants" is the greatest quote in the history of quotes. It is my new mantra.
