Recipe: Yummy Green Smoothies

I have been pondering getting an appliance that I could make juice or smoothies with. Something that would make it easier to eat lots of fruit and veggies without making a huge mess and fighting with the blender. So I got the GE Single Serve Blender for $20 at Walmart. I almost got the Nutri Bullet but I'll take the cheaper version! It does really the same thing and I can have all the Jamba Juice and Odwalla Superfood-like drinks I want. I love being able to make up my own recipes and add things like Greek yogurt to make a smoothie that tastes like froyo! I prepped most of my ingredients at the beginning of the week since we both drink at least one a day during our busy schedules.

Some ideas so far for ingredients: Greek yogurt, banana, kale, spinach, nectarines, strawberries, pineapple, kiwi, mango, apple, carrot, blueberries, peanut butter, honey, cocoa, almonds and flax seed. I have been perfecting my recipes and want to share some with you! Here is my first one.

You Will Need
1/2 cup kale de-stemmed chopped
1/2 cup spinach
1 cup strawberries chopped
1 banana sliced
1/2 cup pineapple chunks
1/2 cup cold spring water
1 tablespoon honey
10 whole almonds

Directions
If you are using a single serve blender, you will want to measure loosely and pack in the ingredients into the blender cup. If you end up with a little extra room, you can always add more. Blend together, shaking as needed to be sure that everything is pulverized. Blend until smooth and no chunks.

Enjoy! This smoothie is nutty and sweet!

yum. if you try peeling the banana, then slicing it and freezing it, you get something icy and even creamier!

Avacado is really good in a smoothie! It makes it creamy like a milk shake! I like to use coconut water as my liquid too

I think I would be willing to try this. I am really weird when it comes to texture and I would be afraid it would be hard for me to get down, but I might try!

I keep thinking about putting kale in my smoothies, then get this very weenie-like inner-four-year-old whiny voice saying, "But what if I don't liiiiike it?" I should toughen up and try it out.

In other news, I saw this on Jezebel and thought of you:

Last time I tried a "green smoothie" it tasted very.....leafy. Perhaps I didn't use enough fruit. Thanks Rachele, will give this a try :)

Oh I agree on the bananas, It is really easy to make fudge pops with frozen bananas, coco, greek yogurt and honey. It is delicious.

I'm going to have to try making some smoothies. This would be a tasty pre summer treat. :D

Love this! I've been making smoothies everyday recently like you! Wish I had known about the $20 machine, seriously! I bought the nutribullet at best buy, which was about $30 cheaper then online, but still! $20 is better :)

Sometimes I also add a little seeds that have good nutritonal benefits, and sometimes when I run out of fresh fruit like bananas, I'll use organic frozen fruits that I can keep around for backups. Oh and when your bananas get really ripe, you can freeze them or any other fruit if you think you won't eat it in time! But yes, it's another way to add more greens to my day.

Thanks for sharing. Lovely blog.
