Fat Women Should Not Have Short Hair? You Are Wrong.

I fucking hate when people tell me what to do. Whether it's not wearing leggings as pants or watch 100 episodes of a TV series in a week, I do what I want. So when I hear advice being given on what is flattering or what fat women are supposed to do or not do, I get angrier than Gordon Ramsey in a moldy walk-in cooler at a crappy restaurant.

So, man, if I want to have short pixie hair, then I am going for it! All the haters that say you shouldn't have short hair if you face is round, it isn't flattering or will make your body look bigger, can step to the left. These days, fat woman are wearing what they want and going for their dream hairstyle. For me, that is a short do!

I may not be a pixie-sized person but I feel as twee and cute as the next tiny short haired girl. I have been maintaining a short hairstyle from home for years. I don't necessarily recommend trying to chop your hair off yourself in the bathroom tonight for the first time, but if you are fat and want to have short hair, then please go for it! If you hate it, hair grows back. Just don't let any hokey advice in People Magazine or some misogynist douche tell you that you aren't allowed. Stop worrying about minimizing your size or following rules.

To the celebrity gossip shows that spend 5 minutes talking about the length of a woman's hair and if it suitable, fuck off. Let Miley do her thing. She isn't ending the world with a buzz cut. To the fools trying to control their partner by making them promise to not chop off their locks, you are being selfish and probably missing out on truly loving someone. You don't need to prove your femininity or worthiness as a fat person with your hair. Fat women can have short hair too. We can also have long hair, medium hair, no hair or bright pink hair!

Chop! Chop!

When I was first wanting to cut my hair short and was feeling too nervous, I did some googling and found your blog. It gave me some guts to just do it, and now over a year later I can't imagine growing my hair back out. I love it. So thank you!

I had a pixi cut for a good 6 years or so and for the past 6 or 7 I've been alternating between short and long hair (I get bored with my hair easily!), I say if you want to cut/grow/dye/shave/dread/do whatever the heck you like to your hair then go for it! After all its your hair and if you don't like it, it will always grow back :)

Pixie haircuts are one of those cuts I seriously wish I could pull off because I love the idea of short hair, but every time I've tried to go that route, I end up looking way more masculine than I want to look... So I've given up on that one...

Your hair is adorable, and I love seeing all the different ways you style your short hair. I'm about to take the plunge and take my first short(er) cut in 21 years!

Just cut my hair short after much melodrama at the hairdresser! So this post is timely for me and makes me smile.

The only problem is that as a woman my fuck-youness concerning my appearance always has to be balanced with my own very real fear of street harassment. You know? I'm just going on a walk with a friend today, but I'm still scared that my fatness + short hair + trousers will be SENSATIONAL enough for someone to hurl insults at me (it's happened before).

I just hope this problem is eroding slowly, as more awesome ladies gain the confidence to present themselves how they want. I'm so sick of women having to have to think of their haircuts/clothes/makeup or lack of/facial expressions/whatever in terms of safety hazards because Joe Public might not approve. Sigh.

This is a long-winded way of saying hi, I really like your hair. And its prominence in this blog. You are great.

Your hair looks frikkin awesome on you, but you totally already know that. I also just wanna say that you do quite the amazing job on cutting your own hair! I become petrified when I just trim my own bangs. Props!

I've wanted to get a pixie for soo long and this is inspiring me! The only thing is that I've heard it takes longer to upkeep and I literally spend no time on my hair now that it's long. So we'll see! xx

You had me at your second sentence. Well, had me explaining to my boss what I was fucking off with on company time anyway. I laugh loud. >.>

Your asymmetrical pixie is, to quote my daddy, the cat's arse. While I keep my hair in a basic sort of Betty Paige Bob, I collect wigs to change it up. My next conquest will be an asymmetrical 'doo. Now just to choose the colours...

I love your hair! My hairstylist refuses to cut mine shorter than my shoulders because I cry and cry and cry. But that's exactly it, no one should tell anyone how to wear their hair! If I want hair down to my ass I'm going to do it. For some reason all the women in my family believe that as a big girl you should have shoulder length hair with bangs.

Chele said...

I have the SAME EXACT (Target) dress, but I love that you're wearing it with leggings. It always feels so short to me and I can't wear my usual thighs-rub-together-biker-shorts under it. :-)

15 years ago a total stranger on the tramway told me that he liked my hair, but my cut was terrible. All the people looked at him and at me, so I said "thank you for your opinion but don't give a damn what you think". Everybody laughed and I felt so strong and proud that I was able to answer at all! As to your hair cut, I like it, although it doesn't matter what I think, right??? I like your style, I keep coming back to your blog to see what ideas you came up with, but the prettiest thing about you is your smile. It extends to your eyes. So keep smiling!!!

I've been rocking my fat girl pixie since my son was born almost three years ago. I had to go to three different stylists before I could convince them to lop it off. I love my pixie and would never go back. I love that I can get ready in 10 minutes and that I'm not a sweaty mess in the heat.

I love my short hair. I was thinking about growing it back out, but I'm thinking I'm going to keep it cut. It's SO EASY to take care of at this length and I can tart it up or leave it messy.

What's funny is that when I weighed about, oh, 100 lbs less than I do now, a hairdresser told me I shouldn't have short hair because of my round face (it's round no matter my size - I have a baby face). I cut it short anyway and HEY GUESS WHAT?!?! It looked awesome then and it looks awesome now.

I love you hair! I also love your shirt and the picture of you and kitty with her spread eagle pose :)

Which douchebag said you can't have short hair? Do you want me to sort them out? (Cockney speak for concrete boots, ha!) You rock your hair and you'd never guess you cut it yourself if you didn't say so, you talented wee bugger. I put off having an undercut on one side for years because of my fat face and I fucking rock that shit! I wish I did it years ago.

Jackie Jardine said...

I'm a girl with more to love who rocked a faux-hawk for years. It also took me years to grow out when I decided it was time for a new look. And while I love styling my long locks now, I miss the days of slapping some beeswax on that 'do and spiking away...especially since it's so damn hot outside!

Rock on with what makes you happy.

This was so perfect! I cut my hair again today after deciding that I missed my pixie, and this only served to remind me how much I love it! Even as a fat girl, it totally makes me feel adorable, round face or otherwise. And now I'm sorely tempted to dye it...some colour. Haha.

Girl, you know I love me some short hair on a round face! OF COURSE! Also, I almost bought that dress as well...and, I love you for this post! I hate that "long-haired beauty" myth almost as much as I hate the "skinny girl beauty" bullshit.

I just found your blog via FB and am so glad that I did. I love your style and strength. Love the new hairdo, too. Forgive me if you've posted deets on this before, but I have to ask where you got the top/tunic you're wearing in these pics. I absolutely LOVE it. Thanx!

Oh man, I remember when I cut my waist length hair into a bob. People who I didn't know but saw regularly - at church, on my everyday bus, etc... - went out of their way to tell me that 'you look soooo young," meaning you look too young, or "well yeah, you want to get this short hair phase out of your system." Even though I'm an English grad student who studies gender/paternalism, I was still surprised at the pervasive attitude that my short hair was a phase, a mistake, or a cry for help. It's been over a year, and I have no intention of letting it grow out anytime soon!

Kitika said...

Add to this the "aren't you a little old for that look?" and it makes me want to bunny kick them. Yep, I'm in my 30's, overweight, and have been cutting and dying my own hair from the time I was about 14. Stylists will almost never do what I want, and the few times I have gone to one I have ended up running home and fixing it immediately.
So now I have blue/purple/pink hair with an undercut and sometimes I let it afro, or dred for a day, or do victory rolls. I get nasty looks, but screw them. My body. My hair.

Somehow I missed this post and caught it through the catch up, this is awesome! I have had short hair for years, I even shaved it back in February. Once a woman whose job was to tell me how to get a job said I ought to consider growing it out, I went shorter the next time I cut my hair. It's my hair you are not telling me how long to have it. I am now growing it out but that's only because I'm planning on doing something I've wanted for years - get dreadlocks. I've done my research and am researching methods and shampoo and what not to do (wax is a never ever) and when my hair is finally long enough I will do it, fuck society!

I'm 5'7 almost 300 lbs (and almost 100% healthy). I have pin straight, thin, limp hair. No matter what I do to it, the look falls out in less than an hour (even with spray). I was wanting to go get a no hassle assymetrical pixie. I posted to FB a trial run of the hairstyle and all I got was that's too boyish, too dkyish, girls should have long hair. I say what is the point in having long hair if you keep it slicked back in a pony tail ALL THE TIME? That doesn't make me any more feminine.

I just chopped mine off into a pixie. The picture of Michelle Williams that I tore out of an old SELF magazine to take to the salon actually included a caption advising round-faced gals to avoid it. Up yours, SELF! I look adorable. I love your hair and your blog, thanks for posting this.

I actually got my hair cut short yesterday! I loved my grandma's face when she saw it (she was always the one who told me i was too heavy for short hair) and now I am rocking my curly short hair. Thank you for posting this!

Love your haircut!

The hair is the last thing to go. Up until the time you cut it, your hair was the only thing on your body that you hadn't given up on because It didn't matter how much food you ate, you could always make your hair look nice. But like everything else you've given up on, you finally said screw it with the hair. Now you can say "I completely don't give a shit". I hope the man (or woman) in your life is proud of you. At least you can still color it...until you give up on that

Stay confident and sexy. I love the feet tats as well. You're simply yumie....

Not yet because I treats my mom and 4yo to haircuts but I have a super cute cut and color picked out!

I found your site when I googled "plus size + pixie cut". I have always wanted to get a pixie but always laughed it off and said that I would be all face. After I read some of your posts I thought about how some women hide behind their hair like a safety blanket and that society has a womens beauty wrapped up in her hair. Then I thought f-that! I cut my hair into a pixie and I feel like I'm letting it all out there. I have a hump back and a double chin and I am BEAUTIFUL!!!! It's very empowering and I owe some of that to you. Thanks!

You're one of many blogs I read before having the confidence to go for the chop and I now love my new short do after hiding behind my long hair for years. I'm now wearing red lipstick and feeling good about myself. Thankyou!!
