OOTD: It's My Birthday!

Hey! Today is my birthday! But this is what I wore on Halloween. I often dressed up after Halloween, for my usual Halloween-themed birthday party, so I thought it was appropriate to post this today. I am trying my hand at millinery. Making hats! I have a few fascinators, vintage and new, and have always thought about making a few of my own. I am sure I will post more about them as I whip them up. I have been recycling fabric from old clothes and bought a bunch of flowers and supplies from the Dollar Store. You would be amazed at what can be done with things from the Dollar Store! They actually have some fake flowers that are in lovely dusty vintage colors. I can't wait to make some really pretty flower ones. Well, I am pretty low-key about my birthday so we'll probably go out to dinner tonight and watch a movie.

dress : fashion bug
cardigan : thrifted
leggings : walmart
flats : payless
glasses : coastal
lipstick : dollar store
kitty sweater clips : c/o amber skies designs
fascinator : diy

I used sewed this one up with felt and wire to make the edge after watching this video.

First of all, Happy Birthday!! Hope you have an awesome rest of the day!

Second Ah! So glad you got the clips! I was worried because I've had to resend two orders now (although they weren't going to the states). Thanks for liking them haha! I think I've said this before, but I really love that sweater. Yay for scalloped edges. Love the outfit.

Finally that fascinator is awesome. I see them online all the time but never thought of making my own. I sense some crafting in my future. Thanks for being an inspiration once again!

Many happy returns! I love that Fashion Bug dress. Shades of grey and polka dots are two of my favorite things and that dress has both. I was never a big fan of Fashion Bug, but every once in a while, I'd find something really cute there. I'm sad that the parent company that bought the retail group that owns Lane Bryant, Catherines, Fashion Bug and a couple of other plus size brick&mortar stores and online retailers decided to close all Fashion Bug stores in 2012 and shut down their website. Fashion Bug is no more, completely gone. One less plus size option out there for people to shop. Not to bum you out on your b-day, but it makes me sad.

On a happier note, did you know that November 1 is El Dia De Los Muertos in Latino culture? The day to celebrate dead ancestors, decorate family altars with sugar skulls, paint your face like a calavera (decorative skull), and picnic in the cemetery (with the dead ancestors, of course). A lot of the Latino students at the high school where I work paint their face with calavera art on either Oct 31 or November 1 in honor of the Day of the Dead. They do some amazing face painting art. If you can find a calavera face painter in your area, you should give it a try one year in honor of your b-day and El Dia De Los Muertos.

Haha, my husband was a little weary of that spider. I'm gonna make some purty ones that aren't so scary haha.

You are too sweet!

Thank you hon! I have an email to send you, but I am slow...

I did! I had all sorts of stuff going on, sorry it took so long. I am sure they will be featured in many more outfits to come too.

The fascinators are soo fun to make. This one I sewed with wire and felt sort of using this tutorial -http://www.pinterest.com/pin/231935449533545811/ But I also made one that is cardboard cut into a circle, cut a slit in it and made it into a little dome and covered it in fabric. There are lots of tutorials out there. And I used all dollar store stuff and recycled fabric from old clothes.

I just saw this. Happy birthday, beautiful! I love that tarantula fascinator!

Berlyn said...

No worries, just glad you got them and that you're back in the blogosphere haha

I once did up a pillbox hat out of cardboard and repurposed fabric, so the cardboard method may be the way I go first. And honestly, I love the dollar store for all crafty things haha. There's so much there that has potential. I actually can't wait to get on this project, thanks!

Happy belated birthday! hat making is super fun. In university I got into it for a while. My friend and I made sushi pill box hats from this interesting hat book she hat. It was written by an Asian lady who was wearing two different coloured cat shoes! I was trying to find it online to show you because I think you would get a kick out of it it but no luck. Have fun being a milliner!
